Small Winter Pleasures

by Nan Stuckwisch, Silver Magpies.com

The other day, I had a really dear friend over for a birthday lunch. Instead of using the dining room table, I set a side table in the living room. On a bright, cold Friday afternoon we sat in comfortable chairs and ate a delicious meal. After the meal, we chatted for ages and sipped hot chocolate from these tiny demitasse cups by Minton c. 1887.

Silver magpies - George Jensen Demitasse Spoons

Small pleasures - this time it is a tiny cup of hot chocolate in a gorgeous Minton demitasse cup.

Cobalt and gold china is endlessly enthralling to me, especially when paired with hot chocolate and some lovely silver. These demitasse spoons are modernist pieces in the Acadia pattern from George Jensen.

When the afternoon came to a conclusion and we reluctantly had to part, clean-up was a snap.  In addition to putting my silver in the dishwasher, I put my china in too.  Even heavily gilt pieces like these.  The key to safe dishwashing china is to let it cool completely – and I mean stone cold – in the dishwasher before touching it.  Because the gilding is essentially painted on, if you touch it while it’s even the tiniest bit warn, you risk smearing the gilding.  In all the years I’ve been putting my china in the dishwasher I’ve never had a problem.

Small pleasures with a good friend, beautiful things and easy clean-up…what could be better?

Silver Magpies for vintage silver

Hello!

Nancy Stuckwisch of Silver Magpies has had a life-long fascination with vintage silver. She believes we should get the silver out of the cupboard, onto the table, and then into the dishwasher.

In addition to writing for The Daily Basics, Nancy also blogs on her own website and is a regular columnist for Silver magazine and  writes about Silver in Arlington for Examiner.com

Love this idea, plus I didn’t know about the dishwasher. We used our china for a party, then I washed and it did get ruined. Good to know now about temp. Thanks
