You don’t give them much thought usually unless you are engaged at some level of constructing a house. However, like most folks nowadays, the reality of staying in your home for longer periods of time and not ‘moving up to the next house’ has prompted homeowners to refine the homes they have. Door knobs are not cheap no matter what. So if you are going to invest in them, choose wisely adhering to door knob design rules.

Door Knob Rule # 1-

Be consistent – make sure the finishes you choose are compatible. If you are doing an old house, use brass, wood, iron, or patterned, but don’t mix in modern knobs, chrome or nickle.

Door Knob Rule # 2 -

After establishing the ‘look’ for the house, you may vary the knobs from room to room but use the same or compatible looking knob in the same room.

Door Knob Rule # 3-

Unless your home is very grand, only use rosettes with your knobs, which are the round part that fits against the door. The longer back plates are meant for the interior of exit doors or for grander homes in the public rooms such as living, dining and entrance ways.

.

Doorknobs can be pricey, but don’t opt for cheaper models.  Why? Well, chances are pretty high that you will not be buying door knobs for these doors in this home ever again. Consider it a one-shot deal, an investment. Secondly, if you are the transient sort, these are the details that will make your home sell for more.

Happy hunting!
