Shelf Pleasure Book Club – Week of May 8th

Hi Fellow Readers!

Come on, admit it, every now and again it’s fun to get lost in a good young adult novel. Whether it’s Twilight or The Hunger Games, there’s a good chance you have delved into the YA world at some point. And now it’s time to check out the “New Adult” books that are all over the shelves. If you aren’t familiar with the New Adult genre—or even if you are—we have all you need to know.

We’re big fans of author Beth Kendrick’s witty and warm novels, and are excited that the author herself visited Shelf Pleasure this week to share a few surprising tidbits about her life. Also visiting Shelf Pleasure is author and actress Kathryn Leigh Scott (Dark Shadows) who talks about the positives of typecasting.

Here are this week’s must-reads.

5 Things We Bet You Didn’t Know About…Beth Kendrick
In celebration of her new book, The Week Before The Wedding, the author shares five fun facts about herself.

Love/Hate: Superman
Author and Actress Kathryn Leigh Scott on how one role can define a career–and maybe that’s not such a bad thing.

On Critique Groups
Are critique groups helpful or more trouble than they’re worth? One writer shares his thoughts.

As for our personal reading, Kristen is attempting to tackle Facebook COO Sheryl Sanberg’s Lean In. We’ve heard mixed things, but so far Sandberg’s advice is straightforward and helpful. We haven’t experienced much of what she speaks of coming from the kinder gentler world of book publishing (where often females are more prevalent than men), but Kristen appreciates and is internalizing her tips, such as accepting compliments fully and pushing for credit when it is due.

In honor of the movie coming out this week, Stacy is reading The Great Gatsby. Though she can’t believe she hasn’t read this classic before now, she is enjoying this fascinating story about the beautiful Daisy Buchanan and the mysterious Jay Gatsby. It will be interesting to see how the movie turns out!
