Hand Rejuvenation: Get sexy hands after 40

hand rejuvenation post

Hand rejuvenation

My 14 year old son is a budding special effects makeup artist, and uses me as his canvas on a regular basis. Last fall he wanted to do a life cast, and asked to use my hand as the model. I was happy to oblige…that is until I saw his authentic result (see below). I don’t know when it happened, but seemingly overnight I developed (ahem) mature hands.

At 45 years old, I felt as though it was not too late to reverse the damage, and the great news for you and me is that you can fix it, reverse it, and in some cases even eliminate it.

What is going on?

In coming up with solutions to the aging hand issue, we have to look at what happens to make our hands look so much older than the rest of our body. In short, we experience two types of aging. Intrinsic and extrinsic aging.

Intrinsic aging

This is what could be considered ‘natural’ aging: it’s what happens to all of us regardless of whether we have taken care of our skin and bodies, or not. It causes:

  • natural loss of fatty tissue
  • bone density and size reduction
  • slowing of collagen production
  • decreasing elastin

Extrinsic aging

This type of aging is generally considered to be environmental and preventable. Some factors that affect this type of aging include:

  • Sun (ultraviolet) exposure
  • Lifestyle choices (smoking, drinking, drug use)
  • Gravity
  • Pollution

Plaster cast of my hand in October 2012–horrifying!

By the time you’re 40-something, you have had 4+ decades of both types of aging, and the result is older looking hands. I’ll tell you, seeing my hand as a plaster cast was shocking for me. It caused me to start researching solutions, and now I am sharing them with you.

Super Easy do-at-home fixes

First we need to give our hands some skin care lovin’. Our hands doing pretty much everything for us, and we neglect them. Here are some simple suggestions to stop the neglect, and slow down the appearance of aging.  The following is a list of things you can do to help mitigate or temporarily affect the appearance of your hands. Beyond daily care

Taking care of your hands and wearing sunscreen daily will do a lot to make your hands look more youthful, but there are other, more invasive treatment options that available and have spectacular results.

Note: If seeking ANY type of invasive treatment, be sure to really do your own research on the treatment, and the doctors who provide it.

.

Filler Hand Rejuvenation

If you are looking for immediate, long lasting results, filler hand rejuvenation, or filling the tops of your hands with dermal filler is becoming a very popular option.  Your doctor will inject a dermal filler like Radiesse, Restylane or even your own fat, and smooth out the wrinkles, and loose skin to replace fat loss (great, the only place we don’t want to lose fat!).

The treatments are performed in office and can run anywhere from $500 per hand to several thousand. Treatment time is less than one hour.

.

Laser Hand Rejuvenation

Plastic Surgeons use many different laser treatment methods to obtain different results.  The primary function of the laser as a treatment is to send energy or radio frequencies below the surface of the skin, and force rejuvenation from the inside out.  You will not see significant results immediately, but rather over time.

Prices are all over the map for these treatments, but click on the links below to get more information on procedure, downtime, and pricing.

Chemical Peels

A chemical peel can do wonders for the appearance of the skin on your hands. It can reduce if not remove discoloration from sun damage, and create a smoother surface that more readily absorbs other treatment products.

As a medical Esthetician, I usually recommend a chemical peel first before going the more invasive laser route for hand rejuvenation.  Once the surface anomalies are reduced, you can get a better idea if further treatment is even necessary.

Prices range from $75 – $300. The treatment time is usually 30 minutes or less.

Tell me, would you (have you) tried any of these hand rejuvenation techniques to improve the appearance of your hands? What were your results?

I bookmarked this one. I am bad at always putting on gloves when I head to the garden so my hands can use some work. Thanks for the informative blog!
