DSC_0012One of the finest properties in Mexico, Imanta Resort (part of the Relais & Chateaux group) offers unparalleled luxury and privacy in Punta de Mita, Mexico. Surprisingly affordable in the off-season, this resort specializes in romance and quiet retreats for family reunions. Celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow and Christina Aguilera appreciate the seclusion that this oasis offers, and I did too on my recent trip to the Riviera Nayarit region.

outdoor dining imantaIn just an hour, I arrived by private car (all guests are offered this service) at Imanta from the Puerto Vallarta Airport where the General Manager, greeted me personally. A cold cloth and welcome drink awaited me in the open-air lobby that set the tone for a lovely stay.

Bedroom at the Imanta Resort in MexicoEach freestanding, well-appointed unit has their own outdoor hot tub with incredible views of the pristine beaches below. My enormous ocean front casa shared a large infinity pool with a mirror image unit on the other side. These two accommodations also had exclusive access to an open-air kitchen, dining room and lounge area that overlooked the pool and vista below.

Although the resort was full, it felt like I had the place to myself. Built into the hillside and staggered, the stunning architecture allows guests to take advantage of the views but maintain privacy.

snacks imantaBecause Imanta is part of the Relais & Chateaux group, excellence in cuisine is part of the experience. En plein air dining was an option each evening, even on hotter days because when the colorful sun set, the air was cool and receptive for a wonderful meal outside. Chef Olivier Deboise uses local ingredients (chilies, tomatoes, herbs, fish and more) from nearby markets to give an authentic flair to his gastronomy. His French wife is the pastry chef who creates delicious delicacies that incorporate her heritage into her masterpieces while still cooking with Mexican spirit. The results of the international combination of flavors were oh so tasty and I know difficult to pull off given that humidity typically interferes with pastry making.

IMG_6872The developer of the property used stones from other parts of the acreage to create the floors, walls and walkways throughout the resort. This gave the property an indigenous feel that I very much appreciated. His commitment to building as green as possible led to some interesting choices of materials, but also created some obstacles as well. Uneven steps meant I had to be careful not to fall, especially at night. Needless to say, this is not the vacation for you if you need assistance with walking or taking stairs, but for those in good health it is a dreamy existence to be in the lush tropical environment so instep with nature.

DSC_0096The best part for me was being able to listen to the surf below while sleeping and having the feeling like I was living in a tree house without compromising luxury amenities. No wonder Travel + Leisure voted it one of the “50 best hotels in the world, 2011.”

Although I was special guest of Imanta Resort and Riviera Nayarit, in no way did that influence my view that this is one of Mexico’s best kept secrets. The opinions are my own, as usual. Cheers!
