I might be partial to Newport because I live here.  I am not ‘from here’, but I have been made to feel at home in a place that ofttimes is viewed as a playground for only the rich. In fact,  those of us who live here, for the most part, do not live in one of the mansions. The Newport lifestyle runs deep through all walks of life and neighborhoods here.  There is a sense of belonging, a hometown atmosphere and ownership we feel and share in Newport’s heritage that gives ‘Newporter’s a bond that transgresses all else.

Tea was wonderful, the conversation flowing and we had a truly lovely afternoon. Bettie’s passion throughout her life has been to live and share a gracious lifestyle and she does so with such ease and grace. Her philosophy is seen in her new book which illustrates the lifestyle of some of the most gracious homes in this city by the sea.

Bettie was happy to have us, Andrea and I, the two Newport bloggers. I am not sure if it was because we understood exactly what her mission was in writing LIVING NEWPORT or because we were two local fellow journalists. No matter what, she made us feel like new found friends and in an instant, we could see that she wrote this book with a sincere purpose in mind. As much as it is about celebrating Newport and its style today, it is about passing on the knowledge, entertaining idiosyncrasies, decorating and style tips to whomever gazes upon these pages. If you walk away with one inspiration on how to live a more enjoyable life, spy a great decorating idea or are moved to come and visit this town, Bettie’s has succeeded.

Point in fact; my friend and author of the blog, The Newport Stylefile, Andrea McHugh and I were invited to tea at the Bellevue Avenue home of Bettie Pardee, author of Living Newport, Houses, People and Style. Bettie, a former contributing editor for Bon Appetit Magazine, also wrote Private Newport: At Home and in the Garden. She was the hostess for the PBS series,  “The Presidential Palate: Entertaining at the White House” and is renown for her extensive knowledge of gardens, flower arranging and the fine art of entertaining and living. Suffice it to say, Bettie is the quintessential hostess.
