Toma Clark Haines of The Antiques Diva® & Co European Tours gets Myra to reveal her top 3 sources for shopping for antiques in this Tastemaker’s Take on Paris.
Fatmir Tarag
Les Puce de Paris-St Ouen, Paul Bert, Allee #1, Stand 19
What trip to Paris would be complete without a tour of the famous French flea market –Les Puce de Paris . While it’s easy to get lost in the 14 districts and 7 mile maze of antique-filled alleyways, the perennial Parisian Myra knows exactly where she’s going when she enters the market. It’s off to Marche Paul Bert, allee # 1, stand # 19 for industrial mirrors, large planters and Provencal dishes from her favorite vendor Fatmir Tarag. Rumor has it Myra isn’t the only one who loves Fatmir’s fab finds –the chic shop Anthropologie is purported to buy inventory for their stores here as well. If you’re not popping into Paris anytime soon, have no fear – from time to time Fatmir posts his products on FarFetchers.com .
Epoca –60 Rue de Verneuil –75007 Paris
In a loft a stone’s throw from the Seine, the unconventional antiquarian Mony Litz-Einstein (and yes, rumor has it that she’s “all relative”, houses a glamorous salon filled with French finds perfect for those searching for the avant-garde. Specializing in sensational Swedish, faux boix and everything from tramp art to contemporary art to primitive pieces, Einstein curates one of the most unique and rare collections of antique furniture, lighting and art on the continent. Recognizing her style is in high demand, Einstein offers international clients who are not on the next red-eye an opportunity to shop online and will ship internationally. Epoca is a Parisian stop Myra never passes when in the city of light. Epoca.
La Foire Nationale à la Brocante et aux Jambons
La Foire Nationale à la Brocante et aux Jambons on the Ile de Chatou in the Ile de France, a French flea market held twice annually in March and September Myra loves nothing more than hopping across the pond in March and September to tour The French National Fair of the Flea Market and Ham, one of the largest antiques and gourmet fairs in France. Held in the Parisian suburb of Ile de Chatou famous as the setting for August Renoir’s impressionist paintings, Myra cashes in on luxe restored French fauteuils, gorgeous gilt barometers and miles of marketable décor finds. Just because this is a flea market, don’t assume it is going to be bric-a-brac –you’re just as likely to find an authentic Louis XV commode lurking in a stall as you are 18th C porcelain, vintage paintings and stacks of pedigreed silver. The stalls located at the interior of the market boast the best quality inventory with a slew of period pieces. Chatting with the vendors whose inventory you’re particularly drawn to can lead to exchanging carte de visites, getting you secret addresses and bonne invitations into the French countryside to visit the vendor’s private collections chez them.
