Wellies are nothing new. Actually, they are very old. 1850’s old.  Trendy, Preppy, Utilitarian, Sloanie… that’s recently, but, did you know….

Wellies got their name from the First Duke of Wellington.  He instructed his shoemaker, Hoby of St. James’ Street in London, to modify the 18th century Hessian Boot.  They became quite fashionable amongst the best circles in London and they still are.

Fleecy Wellie Liners

Fact: Originally made of leather, the rubber boot became popular upon Charles Goodyear’s invention of vulcanized rubber in the mid 1800’s.

Fact: Although made in Edinburgh, Scotland, Rubber Wellington boot factory was founded by an American, Henry Lee Norris, who settled in Scotland and brought American rubber workers over to start the business.

Fact: Norris’s company, The North British Rubber Company made 1,185,036 boots for trench warfare for British soldiers during  World War One and supplied soldiers with the same boot during World War Two.

  1. I have a pair! Well, not the Wellis brand, but they are rubber boots. They come in very handy when I go feed the chickens and horses. Mine are getting old… I think I need to check out all those lovely patterened ones. :)
